Brené Brown's 10 Guideposts for Wholehearted Living are so brilliant. Her latest talk is called The Power of Vulnerability. This audible book is different than her TED Talk, it's not in printed form. This is a culmination of all of Brené Brown's decades of research. Six 1-hour sessions that will change your life. Session 5 & 6 are all about these guideposts. I've listened to this talk 3 times now in the last 7 months. I recommend a listen through, and then a second pass with paper and pen for notes because there are so many nuggets of wisdom everywhere.

Cultivate Play + Rest, Let Go Of Exhaustion as a Status Symbol + Productivity As Self-Worth
Brené Brown says the main barrier to being able to rest and play is that exhaustion has become a status symbol and productivity has become a symbol of self worth. This belief leads us to even viewing even SLEEP as a waste of time and leaves us sleep deprived and prone to disease and depression.
I am a very driven person much of the time. It is hard to sit and relax when there are things I know that I should be doing. But I have learned that if I do not allow time for play and rest, I overload myself, get overwhelmed and I can hit a low. We all have our limit, our own personal off button that will trigger unless we are mindful. This triggering can lead into numbing out - escaping into Netflix, drugs or alcohol. It can lead to depression, anxiety and can turn into a gateway to other things in our lives. To "rest and play" does not mean that we are lazy, or unmotivated. We aren't a waste of space, or being unproductive. Cultivating rest and play means that we are valuing our state of mental health, we need to make taking care of ourselves a priority in this way, and playing and resting is a huge part of living in the present moment.
