If you want to travel to see this amazing part of Colorado, the painting features White Dome near Eldorado Lake in the Elk Creek drainage. This view is on The Colorado Trail where it leaves the Continental Divide above Silverton and descends into Elk Creek and the Animas River. To visit this ‘Elk Creek Vista' on The Colorado Trail, you’d need to jeep near the top of Stony Pass above Silverton and then hike 6.4 miles south along Segment 24 of The Colorado Trail. After taking in the vista, the shortest way ‘out’ is to hike 6.4 miles back to near Stony Pass. Total hike distance on The Colorado Trail would be 12.8 miles and all of it above 12,000 feet in elevation.
