This painting to me is about awakening. Many cultures across the world see the Monarch as a transition between this life and the next. I see it that way too... As I worked, I wanted the background to be inspired by my time in Monet's Garden at Giverny, in France. This beautiful abstract flower garden behind the Monarch, moves upwards. As you travel up the painting, you see it transitions into the galaxy and the stars of the universe. This painting is all about the transition from Earth to the heavens of space. From caterpillar to butterfly. From heavy to light. From body to soul. From earth-bound to sky-bound. From asleep to awake. It's about opening your own gate of awareness to wherever you want to lead it. The sacred geometry of the cone flower speaks quietly to God's presence around us, holding us up in gentle support.
